Blacks Need No Leaders * * *
The day of the leader must end-the dawn of the individual must arise
Black Americans do not need the kind of self-appointed leaders they currently have. I don't recall the entire black race in this country taking a national vote to elect Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Louis Farrakhan, the NAACP, California Congresswoman Maxine Waters, the Congressional Black Caucus, or liberal black preachers as our leaders, yet they've seized the mantle of leadership and claim to speak for all blacks in this nation.
Their leadership, however, has proven to be disastrous. These arrogant elitists have given us a continuous diet of racism, paranoia, affirmative action programs, and higher welfare checks; and many display little or no personal integrity in their own lives.
These self-proclaimed leaders have helped grow a welfare system that has resulted in the elimination of the black man as head of the family and placed the government as the "daddy" in most black families today. As a result, civil rights leaders have become the head of the people.
Nearly 70 percent of all black children are born out of wedlock. The welfare system was originally set up to pay recipients money for each child, so this provided incentives for welfare moms to have more children rather than to care for those they already have. (The Welfare Reform Act passed in 1996 has helped encourage moms to get off of welfare, but this process is far from over.)
Current black leaders preach racial hatred and welfare dependency, not peace and independence. They earn their fat salaries by stirring up the racial pot and portraying blacks as the hopeless victims of racism. Unfortunately, most blacks have accepted these men and women as their new slave masters and have allowed these individuals to speak for them. We don't need their leadership.
It is a dangerous thing for a person to blindly put himself under the leadership of any man or woman. Blacks who allow themselves to be led around like sheep by the likes of Jesse Jackson are forfeiting their independence and free will. These leaders almost inevitably exploit their followers. These current black leaders tell blacks how to think, whom to vote for, and how to live their lives.
By preaching race hatred and the cleverly packaged ideology of socialism, these leaders have convinced millions of blacks that white America owes them special treatment: welfare checks, affirmative action programs, and even different grading systems in our nation's universities. Black educators have even created a fictional Afrocentrist history that pushes phony notions of black racial superiority in our nation's schools. Other educators have devised what they call critical race theory, which claims that there's no such thing as objective reality-that "rationality" is simply a tool of white males and is designed to oppress minorities.
Black preachers who have been seduced by these deadly attitudes and political philosophies are perpetuating a cycle of hatred and violence within the black community. They, too, have given up any reason or logic in their preaching and simply parrot the latest politically correct opinions from the Jacksons and Sharptons.
These pastors maintain control of their congregations by instilling a sense of fear in them. Black churchgoers are told that if they challenge the preacher, they're sinning against God. This fear-based manipulation keeps black churchgoers under the domination of these preachers who line their pockets with the tithes of their cult-like followers.
I frequently have black preachers on my daily radio program and have debated them in public forums and on TV. I have seen firsthand how they react when their ideas are challenged. They typically resort to name-calling, accusing me of being condemnatory and judgmental, and incorrectly citing Scripture to chastise me. Every now and then, they even accuse me of being an "Uncle Tom" or a "house nigger"-anything to dodge dealing with facts.
Several years ago, I interviewed the Rev. Leonard Jackson, a pastor at the First African Methodist Episcopal Church (FAME) in Los Angeles. I challenged Jackson to explain why his church and its senior pastor Cecil Murray were handing out "AIDS Prevention" packets to church members when these packets contained condoms. I was astonished by his reply. He denied that his church was telling its members, in essence, "Here's a condom-go out and have sex out of wedlock." But then he justified the condom distribution program by saying that AIDS is a major health problem and there are people who will choose to have sex outside of marriage.
By passing out condoms to his flock, Rev. Murray and his staff members are sinning against their congregation and their surrounding community. They should be preaching abstinence-not giving mixed messages to their churchgoers about sexuality and immoral behavior. When you hand a condom to a church member, you're saying it's okay to engage in unsafe sexual behaviors outside of marriage.
This lax attitude about sex should come as no surprise. Rev. Murray's church is a Hollywood celebrity church. In addition, Murray is a long-time supporter of Bill Clinton and Jesse Jackson.
When it was discovered that Jesse Jackson had fathered an illegitimate child with his secret mistress, Cecil Murray responded with these words: "His enemies will have a weapon, but his friends will have an opportunity, and that is to show forgiveness." He told ABC News that when his congregation learned of Jackson's outrageous behavior, it was met with a "shrug of the shoulders." "It is not that you discount it, it is not that you have no moral assessment, and that you have no concern," said Murray. "But he has said he made a mistake. He is taking care of the child."
Of course, Murray's support for Jackson-despite Jackson's immoral conduct-isn't really a surprise because Jackson's Los Angeles Rainbow/PUSH Coalition maintains an office inside Cecil Murray's FAME Renaissance Center.
Today, the black church isn't a place where one goes to overcome sin. It's a place where one can go and deny the very existence of sin. Sexual and political sins are winked at by these liberal pastors, while they seem to spend all of their waking hours creating racist attitudes in their congregations.
CORRUPTION AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS
The corruption of the black church starts at the top and trickles down into the congregations. Churchgoers eventually become just like their leaders, and sin flourishes without any sense of accountability. Several years ago, Baptist leader Rev. Henry Lyons was arrested and eventually went to jail for embezzlement and fraud. Lyons headed up the National Baptist Convention, a black organization that claimed at the time to represent the interests of five to eight million black church members.
As it turned out, this figure was a myth perpetuated by Lyons to make the NBC look like it had more influence than it did. According to Bonita Henderson, a former aide to Lyons, he created an inflated membership list so he could sell the mailing lists to corporations for marketing purposes. Henderson says the NBC has fewer than seven thousand churches and its mailing list has never been larger than fifteen thousand members.
Lyons was convicted on charges of racketeering and stole more than $4 million from the Anti-Defamation League and other donors with the help of his secret mistress. This money was supposed to help rebuild black churches that had been burned to the ground. Lyons also pastored the Bethel Metropolitan Baptist Church in St. Petersburg, Florida. What was the reaction of the congregation to Lyons' arrest? They actually applauded his return to the pulpit after he was bailed out of jail. How did the leaders of the NBC react? They refused to remove him from leadership while the charges were being investigated.
This says to me that the members of Lyons' church and the leadership of the NBC are willing to tolerate illegal conduct from their leaders because they themselves are engaging in conduct that shames the name of Jesus Christ and makes the church a laughingstock. It's difficult to condemn a person for his unethical conduct when you're engaged in immoral conduct yourself. So, instead of repenting from your own immoral behaviors, you make excuses for the immorality of the person who has been caught.
Lyons was protected and honored by his church members, and he was allowed to remain head of the NBC until he was convicted and sent to jail. Of course, just like Cecil Murray, Lyons is a long-time friend of Bill Clinton. Clinton's immoralities-his lying under oath and his adultery-were obviously of little concern to Lyons because he was guilty of his own improper behavior.
The man who was chosen to take Henry Lyons' place as head of Bethel Baptist Church in 2000 was Joaquin Marvin, an associate minister at Greater Union Baptist Church in Pensacola, Florida. The Florida Department of Corrections alerted the congregation that Marvin had been sentenced in 1991 to two years of community control on a forgery conviction and had been arrested numerous times from 1986 to 1991 on assault charges, showing a weapon, possession of marijuana and crack cocaine, petty larceny, and violating parole. Yet Bethel Church members voted 200-49 in favor of Marvin. Rev. Joseph Harvey, an associate pastor at Bethel, told United Press International at the time, "Everybody at church yesterday was still in favor of him coming. It has been over ten years. His criminal past has no effect on his preaching."
The National Baptist Convention had a dismal history of corrupt leadership even before Lyons took over in 1994. His predecessor was Rev. T.J. Jemison, who put the NBC's power and prestige behind Mike Tyson after he had been charged with raping a young girl in a hotel room. Why? Could it be because Tyson had promised to give the NBC a $5 million gift? Tyson never made good on his promise, but the NBC's credibility was given to Tyson-a man who by all rights should be in a psychiatric care facility. Under Jemison's questionable leadership, the NBC also gave its highest service award to Don King, the boxing promoter, who has been repeatedly under federal investigation for his alleged shady business dealings.
This kind of spiritual corruption within a black church would not have occurred forty years ago. Forty years ago, blacks were ashamed of sin. Personal morality and family togetherness were prized. Love for parents was real, hard work was the norm, and men were strong. The current pathetic state of morality in the black community is a slap in the face to those blacks who suffered and died for our freedoms.
ANTI-AMERICANISM AND RACIST MESSAGES PROMOTED
Black churches have become affiliates of the Democratic party, and most black pastors wink at sin or actively promote sinful behaviors. Black pastors are also guilty of spreading racial hatred through their sermons and by inviting hate-filled leaders into their churches to spread divisiveness and racial tension.
In 2002, for example, the pastor of Salem United Methodist Church in Harlem, New York, allowed Nation of Islam (NOI) racist and anti-American hatemonger Louis Farrakhan to come to his church and give a two-hour speech against America. Farrakhan told the audience that the then-coming war against Iraq was a plot by the Bush administration to wage war on Islam and that blacks must take a leadership role in fighting against the enemies of Allah. He told the assembled, "When I saw the tanks in Tiananmen Square in China, Chinese rolling over their own, I knew that this was being planned against you, here in America."
Farrakhan's anti-American and racist speech was attended by a number of powerful men and women in the entertainment industry as well as Afrocentric racist college professors who support his goals. Among those attending were Def Jam Records executive Russell Simmons, rappers Doug E. Fresh and Queen Pen, hip hop pioneer Afrika Bambaata, Dr. Leonard Jeffries, and various Muslim clerics. Dr. Leonard Jeffries, an Afrocentrist professor and professional racist, applauded Farrakhan's speech as one of the most powerful he'd ever heard.
Now why would the pastor of this black church in Harlem allow a known anti-American, anti-white, and anti-Christian bigot to give a speech from his pulpit? The sad truth is that many black pastors have racial attitudes that are no different from those of Farrakhan, whom I consider to be one of the most dangerous men in this nation. I will devote more time to him later, but this incident is just one of dozens of examples of corruption and racial hatred that exist within the black churches of America.
In July 2002, Farrakhan traveled to Iraq and held talks with Abdul Munem Saleh, Saddam Hussein's Islamic Affairs Minister. He was later quoted by the Iraqi news agency as saying, "The Muslim American people are praying to the almighty God to grant victory to Iraq." Farrakhan has since denied saying this, but based on his rabid anti-American past, I have no trouble believing the quote is accurate.
Many black pastors and members of the radical leftist Congressional Black Caucus were opposed to President George W. Bush's efforts to remove Saddam Hussein. These leftists are showing their anti-American and anti-Jewish biases. They're apparently willing to support any regime as long as it's against American interests or security.
Democratic presidential candidate Al Sharpton, for example, was a speaker in January 2003 at an anti-war rally in Washington, D.C., sponsored by ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism), a coalition spun off of the Workers World party, an openly communist group. Who shared the podium with Sharpton? Congressional Black Caucus leader John Conyers of Michigan gave his support to this rabidly anti-American rally. The infamous former representative from Georgia, Cynthia McKinney, was also on stage to rant against our war on terrorism.
In February 2003, I invited the co-director of the Los Angeles branch of ANSWER, John Parker, on my daily Information Radio Network (IRN) show to find out exactly what he believed about America and our nation's war on terrorism and Saddam Hussein. Parker refused to tell me if he loved America. I then asked him whom he trusted more, Saddam Hussein or President Bush. After repeatedly asking him this same question, he finally admitted that he trusted Saddam Hussein more than President Bush.
WAR IS NOT THE ANSWER?
On February 8, 2003, black liberal clergy from across the country convened at Detroit's Cobo Hall to address the "State of the Black Union." The event was co-hosted by Bill Clinton-lovers Tavis Smiley and Tom Joyner and was televised by C-SPAN. Notable names in attendance were Rev. Al Sharpton, University of Pennsylvania professor Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, and his wife, Rev. Marcia Louise Dyson.
The general theme of the event was that war with Iraq was unjust. Smiley said, "The black point of view about the war is generally not heard in the media." Panelists also noted that major media coverage of the war generally gives viewers perspectives of white men. I've heard of people seeing issues in black and white, but this is ridiculous!
Marcia Louise Dyson praised Louis Farrakhan, saying, "The Nation of Islam has taught us through the works of Minister Farrakhan that we have to take it to the streets. We are responsible for our brothers and for cleaning up our community." She also made this foolish statement: "We cannot say that we are against terrorism in other countries when terrorism exists right here in America."
Al Sharpton said, "To say the war is wrong and wicked is our job as bearers of the truth."
Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes Jr., senior minister at Riverside Church in New York City, stated that if we "ignore the sensibilities of men like Nelson Mandela, then we have a problem." The last time I looked, Nelson Mandela was a communist-socialist pig.
Of course, I had to invite Dr. Forbes to my radio show to ask him about this. Once on the program, he was not much different than most preachers I interview-he wouldn't answer questions directly. He was also very skillful at painting those who saw through his evasions as being extreme.
BOND fully supports President Bush's commitment to fight worldwide Islamic terrorism, and we have been deeply concerned over the future of Israel. I consider Israel to be our spiritual brother, as well as a key, rational democratic partner. If we fail to stand with Israel, I believe America will fail to stand.
