Scale Shapes For Piano – Grade 5, 3rd Edition by piano educator Frederick Stocken is a piano tuition book for students preparing for ABRSM Grade 5 examinations and developing confident scale technique. This updated edition presents the established Stocken Method, using clear keyboard diagrams to help learners recognise and remember the physical patterns of scales. It is well suited to Grade 5 piano students, teachers and anyone seeking a structured companion for regular technical practice.
Clearly presented keyboard diagrams show left- and right-hand layouts together, making it easier to visualise hand positions while practising. Rather than relying on notation alone, the diagram-based approach supports quicker recognition of scale patterns and complements piano lessons, independent study and exam preparation. The book is intended for piano or keyboard players working at Grade 5 level.
The intuitive layout encourages efficient practice by helping learners connect visual patterns with muscle memory. Many teachers have trusted the Scale Shapes series since 2001 because it offers a practical way to reinforce technical skills while building confidence across different keys. Whether used as a daily warm-up, alongside a lesson programme or as focused support before an assessment, this edition provides a clear and dependable reference that can make technical work feel more approachable and rewarding.
This publication focuses on piano scales and technical studies from the Grade 5 ABRSM syllabus rather than songs or performance pieces. Its visual method is designed primarily for learning, revision and technical preparation, while the skills developed can support more confident playing and performance.
Ideal for students progressing through graded piano study, this edition supports consistent learning, confident performance and long-term technical development.
