Every few years, a number flashes across a screen in Times Square, climbing so fast the digits blur before you can read them: the national debt clock. Politicians point to it. Pundits invoke it as proof of recklessness. We're told it's a crisis our children will inherit.
Almost everything about how that number gets talked about is backwards.
The Savings Clock takes apart the most repeated — and least examined — assumption in American economic life: that a government which issues its own currency has to budget like a household, "finding the money" before it can spend. It doesn't. And once you see why, a lot of what passes for fiscal common sense stops making sense at all.
Drawing on the operational mechanics confirmed by Federal Reserve chairs, central bank research, and mainstream economists across the political spectrum, this book walks through:
- Why a currency-issuing government cannot "run out of money" the way a family can run out of dollars — and why that's not a fringe claim
- The simple accounting identity that proves every government deficit is, dollar for dollar, somebody else's savings
- What taxes actually do, if they're not "funding" government spending
- The real story behind "borrowing from China" — and why the common version of it doesn't hold up
- How commercial banks create money every time they issue a loan, and why that matters as much as anything the government does
- The actual limit on government spending — real resources and inflation, not the size of the deficit — and how the U.S. mobilized nearly half its economy during World War II once it stopped asking "how do we pay for it"
This isn't a book that tells you government should spend more, or less. It won't hand you a verdict on any political party's budget. What it will do is replace a question that sounds serious but rarely is — can we afford it? — with one that actually matters: do we have what it takes to build it, without wrecking the value of the dollar in the process?
Written for readers with no economics background, fair to critics as well as proponents, and grounded in historical record rather than slogans, The Savings Clock gives you the tools to follow — and finally judge for yourself — one of the most consequential debates in modern public life.
