When you look upon an ancient church, do you merely see weathered stone and classical craft, or do you feel the heavy weight of prayers whispered across centuries?
Most historical accounts offer a dry inventory of dates, architectural terms, and structural blueprints. They reduce sacred ground to mere tourist destinations and treat miracles as simple folklore. But for those who demand to truly experience the past-to understand the precise moments where divine grace collided with human crisis-a deeper narrative is required. Saved by the Fresco The 1740 Miracle at Castel di Leva and the History of Rome's Sanctuary of Our Lady of Divine Love by Bernard de Clare was written specifically for the discerning reader who knows that the true history of Rome was written not just in the Senate or the Colosseum, but on its holy altars.
Journey back to the spring of 1740 along the desolate, wild expanse of the Via Ardeatina. Picture a lone, exhausted pilgrim trapped against the crumbling masonry of a medieval watchtower, facing imminent death at the jaws of a ferocious pack of wild animals. In that desperate fraction of a second, a simple plea directed at a faded 14th-century wall painting altered the spiritual landscape of Italy forever. This meticulously researched volume uncovers the authentic, documented reality behind the rise of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Divine Love, tracing its journey from a forgotten rural ruin to one of the most powerful spiritual epicenters in Christendom.
Walk through every era of this sacred site with rigorous historical fidelity and spiritual depth. Discover how Popes and architects fought to preserve a piece of plaster cut directly from a medieval wall. Experience the grueling midnight pilgrimages of the 18th century, where thousands marched by torchlight across the Roman countryside. Uncover the darkest hours of 1930, when thieves desecrated the shrine, and learn how one dedicated priest resurrected its sacred mission. Most importantly, relive the terrifying summer of 1944, when the army of the Third Reich occupied Rome. Step inside the packed nave of Sant'Ignazio as Pope Pius XII and the terrified citizens of Rome made a desperate, binding vow to the Madonna of Divine Love-a vow that resulted in the peaceful, bloodless liberation of the Eternal City just hours later.
Every page of this work is packed with verifiable historical facts, primary accounts, and theological insights designed to satisfy the sharpest historian while stirring the soul of the devout. You will explore the sacred halls adorned with thousands of real ex-voto offerings-silent testimonies of miraculous healings, saved lives, and profound interventions. You will witness the fulfillment of a wartime promise through the consecration of the Great New Basilica by Saint John Paul II. This is not a surface-level overview; it is an exhaustive, reverent, and vivid resurrection of a sanctuary that saved Rome.
Will you remain a passive observer of history, or are you ready to step into the sacred story of the miracle that protected the Eternal City?
