Excerpt from Saskatchewan Elementary Arithmetic for Public Schools, Vol. 1
The authors have had in mind three main pur poses ih preparing this elementary Arithmetic. These may be briefly stated as follows: (1) To aid pupils in becoming accurate and rapid in calculation; (2) to train them in independent thinking and in applying their knowledge of number to the actual business trans actions of life; and (3) to aid the teacher in assigning applications of the various principles which have been explained in the class.
The work consists of two parts. Part I. Is designed to carry the pupil through the fifth grade, or to cover the first four or five years at school.
Part I. Begins with two chapters on number-work covering the ground which should be already familiar to the pupil. These review exercises are intended to accustom pupils to the use of a text-book in a subject which hitherto has been entirely oral to them.
