The cover is wrinkled, and the book has a slight amount of shelf wear. Benjamin Capps's acclaimed novel of the Texas cattle frontier. Returning from the Civil War with little more than determination, Sam Chance carves a ranch out of the open range of West Texas and spends a lifetime building it into an empire, facing drought, rustlers, fenced range, and a changing world as the frontier gives way to modern Texas. A classic of Texas and Western literature by one of the state's most respected novelists, reissued in SMU Press's Southwest Life and Letters series with a new introduction by the author and an afterword by fellow Texas novelist Elmer Kelton.
