181 pp. First issued in 1978; this copy, Stated: "II EDIZIONE 1980". "Abbreviations Used in the Volume", p. 7; Glossy black and white drawing of Gissing on ffep/verso; Introduction by Francesco Badolato, pp. 9-22, with particulars of Gissing's life, times, and works. Glossy teal wraps with author and title lettering in white over teal on lower middle front cover; Editor name in very small black letters between title lettering and Publisher name lettering in black across bottom front cover; geometrical design decorative elements on top half front cover. Book is designed for speakers of Italian, learning English at an Intermediate level: 7 short stories, each followed by "Exercises" consisting of "Questions" and "Suggestions for either composition or conversations". Profuse footnotes and annotations explaining English words and expressions or contemporary information to help elucidate Gissing's stories: One needn't be a native Italian speaker to benefit from this. Sewn binding is slightly stretched in a few signatures (NOT "cracked" after the fashion of pages glued to paper spine which are "cracked"), but spine remains strong; only corner tips only show bit of rubbing (NO bumps or curls); 1/4" closed tear at top left spine corner, resulting from that point in a superficial crease on the slant, meeting left edge rear cover at 1" down from top left rear cover corner (crease, long flat, can barely be felt on inside rear cover); small tan spot stain on p. 94 (smudges onto p. 95; much light pencil writing in text which could be erased, but would seem to be an asset to an Italian language student, so is left in (so discreetly done that it is minimally intrusive): describes much worse than it is, but there you have it. Still solid copy at 40 years old: A good read with character and superb didactic utility.…
