On controversial points I have ventured to give my own opinions. I have also endeavoured to emphasize the impor tance of syphilis and gonorrhoea as etiological factors in disease. When we consider that they are probably the oldest diseases which afflicted mankind; that they are both extremely contagious; that syphilis is par excellence the heredi tary disease, and may be transmitted to the third generation that gonorrhoea is the cause of a large proportion of diseases of women, it appears difficult to overestimate their importance.
