The Essential Survival Guide for Newcomers in the US and Canada
Moving to the United States or Canada is one of the biggest decisions you will ever make. The opportunities are real-but so are the challenges.
For many newcomers, the first few months can feel overwhelming. Finding housing, understanding transportation, opening bank accounts, securing income, navigating unfamiliar systems, and adapting to a new culture often happen all at once. Without a clear plan, costly mistakes can quickly create unnecessary stress and delays.
Most newcomers arrive with determination and hope, but very few arrive with a roadmap.
Surviving the First 90 Days provides that roadmap.
Written specifically for immigrants, newcomers, international professionals, students, refugees, and families starting a new life in North America, this practical guide walks you through the critical decisions that shape your first three months. Rather than relying on trial and error, you will gain a structured plan to help you establish stability, reduce uncertainty, and build a strong foundation for long-term success.
Inside this book, you'll learn how to:• Find safe and affordable housing
• Understand transportation options and make smart vehicle decisions
• Open the right banking accounts and begin building your financial foundation
• Navigate essential government and community services
• Find employment opportunities and generate income quickly
• Build productive daily habits and routines in a new environment
• Avoid common newcomer mistakes that cost time, money, and opportunity
• Organize important documents and create systems that simplify your life
• Adapt confidently to North American culture, expectations, and everyday realities
This book does not promise overnight success.
Instead, it focuses on what matters most during your first 90 days: creating a solid foundation. When your housing, finances, transportation, documentation, and income are organized, every other aspect of your transition becomes easier to manage.
Drawing from personal experience as an immigrant and years of observing the challenges newcomers face, this guide provides practical advice, actionable checklists, and proven strategies that can be implemented immediately.
Whether you are arriving alone, with a spouse, or with your entire family, the principles in this book will help you avoid unnecessary setbacks and move forward with confidence.
Don't spend your first months in North America learning everything the hard way. Start with a clear plan, make informed decisions, and build the foundation for the future you came here to create.
Your first 90 days can shape the next several years of your life. Make them count.
Surviving the First 90 Days is the first book in the A Newcomer's Guide to Building a Life in North America series-a practical roadmap designed to help you move from uncertainty to stability, from stability to growth, and ultimately toward financial independence.
Continue your journey in Book 2: Building Your Financial Fortress (Months 6-18), where you'll learn how to establish credit, increase income, and create lasting financial stability in North America.
