Item description from seller

2002 N & M Press reprint (original 1880). SB. xi + 418pp MapPublished Price £11.95 The Story of the Zulu Campaign by Major Waller Ashe and Captain the Hon. E. V. Wyatt-Edgell offers a distinctive cavalryman's perspective on the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Rather than concentrating solely on the dramatic set-piece battles, it provides an informed account of the essential, everyday work of campaigning, including reconnaissance and patrolling, escort duties, the movement of supplies, and the construction and maintenance of forts and depots. This emphasis on the practical realities of military operations gives the book its particular value, presenting a more complete picture of the British campaign in Zululand than accounts focused principally on the major engagements.Although published under both names, Major Waller Ashe was effectively the principal compiler and author. Not himself a participant in the campaign, he drew upon newspapers, Parliamentary Papers and, most importantly, the journals, notes and sketches supplied by officers serving in Zululand. Among his principal correspondents was Captain Wyatt-Edgell, a fellow cavalryman who kept Ashe closely informed from his arrival in Durban in April 1879 until his death at the Battle of Ulundi in July.First published in 1880, the work is now scarce outside major libraries. This facsimile reprint provides welcome access to a valuable contemporary account, particularly for those interested in the cavalry, logistics and day-to-day realities of the Zulu Campaign.
