About this Item
New York: The Babcock & Wilson Company, (1960). Thirty-seventh edition, fourth printing. In fine condition. The ultimate book on modern steam technology, from The Babcock & Wilcox Company of New York. Describes every aspect of the utilization of steam power. The basics are well covered: thermodynamics and fluid dynamics, energy cycles, combustion principles, steam generation, boilers, superheaters, reheaters and stokers. Then, specific applications like the paper industry, metallurgy, ships, submarines, and nuclear power. This book is absolutely packed with diagrams, nomographs, charts and photo illustrations; and there is every conceivable formula relating to all aspects of the science. Although this book is vintage (dated 1960), it is completely relevant technologically, since steam science is integral to the nuclear power industry (heat from fission produces steam that rotate turbines to generate electricity). An amazing technical book in great shape and a good price. The Babcock & Wilcox Company was formed in 1867 by George Herman Babcock (1832-1893) and Stephen Wilcox, Jr. (1830-1893) to market their steam generator they invented (US patent 65,042 dated May 28, 1867). By the early 20th century, the company had established itself as a major supplier of energy generation equipment worldwide; and later in the century had diversified into both fossil-fuel and nuclear generation. The company is still doing well today, with FY 2011 income of $162 million and assets of $2.7 billion. Deep blue cloth boards with gilt-stamped titles and illustration on front and gilt titles to spine. Heavy endpapers, and good quality gloss pages. Profusely illustrated. Large quarto; size is 8-3/4" by 11-1/4". 635 pages (paginated in section/page style), plus appendix, glossary and index. No dust jacket, as issued. Seller Inventory # ABE-1597982044865
