Item description from seller

Octavo. Grey buckram boards. 108 pp. A latter-day critical look at Wolfe's friendship with Kenneth Raisbeck, who showed up in Wolfe's novel "Of Time and The River", which is generally regarded as Wolfe's second autobiographical novel (after "Look Homeward, Angel"). ".For this story, Wolfe developed a foil for Eugene [Gant], a character named Frank Starwick, an intelligent and sensitive young man but also a pretentious aesthete whose response to life and art contrasted sharply with that of Eugene.". Mr. Kennedy (the Editor) goes on to recollect Wolfe's difficulty with writing the novel, and Wolfe's seeking assistance from his own editor Maxwell Perkins. Perkins advised that a number of sections should be cut. "The present book.publishes those sequences that were deleted and supplies some brief commentary that placed will help to link them together.".
