STAG BEETLE HANDBOOK is a complete practical guide for beginners, experienced invertebrate keepers, breeders, educators, and beetle enthusiasts. Raphael Hartley combines essential biology with practical husbandry principles to help readers understand stag beetle behavior, create appropriate environments, manage breeding projects, and avoid common mistakes.
Famous for the impressive enlarged mandibles seen in males of many species, stag beetles belong to a diverse family with fascinating reproductive behavior and lengthy immature stages. Successful keeping requires understanding that adult and larval beetles have very different nutritional, environmental, and housing requirements.
Inside this handbook, you’ll discover:
• Stag beetle natural history, anatomy, life cycle, behavior, and adaptations
• Understanding different species and selecting one appropriate for your experience
• How to identify healthy adults and obtain captive-bred beetles responsibly
• Understanding differences between males and females
• Planning secure, well-ventilated enclosures for adult beetles
• Selecting suitable substrate, hides, climbing surfaces, and furnishings
• Managing temperature, moisture, humidity, and ventilation
• Feeding adults appropriately and maintaining good food hygiene
• Understanding normal feeding, climbing, hiding, mating, and defensive behaviors
• Safe handling principles that minimize falls, injury, and unnecessary stress
• Preparing suitable conditions for breeding pairs
• Courtship, mating, egg laying, and responsible breeding management
• Preparing appropriate egg-laying substrates for females
• Understanding egg development and recognizing emerging larvae
• Larval nutrition and the importance of suitable decayed wood or prepared substrates
• Managing moisture, ventilation, cleanliness, and temperature during larval development
• Understanding larval growth stages and monitoring development without excessive disturbance
• Preparing for pupation and protecting the delicate pupal chamber
• Adult emergence, hardening, maturation, and post-emergence management
• Recognizing abnormal development, injuries, mites, mold, dehydration, and other potential problems
• Preventing overcrowding and reducing aggression between adult beetles
• Maintaining records for breeding, eggs, larvae, pupation, emergence, feeding, and lifespan
• Planning responsibly for offspring before beginning a breeding project
• Ethical sourcing, conservation awareness, and responsible sale or transfer
STAG BEETLE HANDBOOK emphasizes that species-specific research is essential. Development time, adult size, temperature preferences, larval substrate requirements, and breeding behavior can vary significantly between species. A method that works for one stag beetle should not automatically be applied to another.
The guide also promotes responsible keeping and conservation. Keepers should understand applicable regulations before collecting, purchasing, transporting, breeding, or exchanging beetles. Captive or non-native specimens should never be released into the wild, where they could introduce disease or create ecological problems.
Whether you are preparing for your first stag beetle, raising larvae for the first time, improving an established breeding setup, or expanding your knowledge of beetle husbandry, this handbook provides a dependable foundation.
Create suitable habitats, understand the complete life cycle, raise healthier larvae, manage breeding responsibly, and experience successful stag beetle keeping with greater knowledge and confidence.
