25 x 20 cm. Turn of the century photo of young women posing with "Indian" swinging clubs dressed in "sailor" style uniforms. Club swinging tradition began with the Persian Pahlavani tradition and spread throughout the Persian empire to adjacent countries. Picked up by the English stationed in India, it was mistakenly called "Indian Clubs" and redesigned into smaller versions where it became integrated into the system of physical education. Club swinging was introduced to America in the mid -1800's and was even an Olympic sport in 1904. Photography studio listed on cardboard frame: T. Adamowicz, Milwaukee Ave., Chicago. Cardboard frame rubbed and soiled. Cardboard framed black and white photo. Very good.
