"An edition of this speech was brought out by the Revd William Mason and other supporters of economical and political reform, who exaggerated and ridiculed Smelt's defence of the royal prerogative and the character of George III. He remained close to the king, however, who presented him with a house at Kew in 1787 and made several visits there" - DNB. Smelt, an engineer, spent a brief time working in the American colonies.
