Prussian-born economist Maximilian Hirsch (1852-1909) became 'prominent as Victoria's chief spokesman for land values taxation and as a leading light in the colony's free-trade movement . . . Hirsch quickly became a leader in the anti-tariff party' [ADB]. He was a founding member of the Victorian Single Tax League and in 1894 was vice-president of the Australasian Federation League.
