The Science of Enough
You achieved the salary you wanted. You bought the house. You got the promotion. You changed your body. You finished the project.
And then, a few weeks later, you were already thinking about the next thing.
If this sounds familiar, you are not alone — and there is nothing wrong with you.
The problem isn’t you. It’s the mechanism.
What no one told you about the pursuit of “more”
We live in a culture that teaches us, from an early age, that improving is good, growing is good, earning more is good. And, in principle, none of that is false.
The problem begins when “more” stops being a choice and starts functioning as a silent obligation. When every achievement becomes merely a starting point for the next. When you arrive — and can’t recognize that you’ve arrived.
The Science of Enough is a book about that moment. About why there never seems to be enough — and about how to develop the ability to recognize when something is already enough for what truly matters.
In this book, you will discover:
-
Why hedonic adaptation makes extraordinary achievements become normal — and why this doesn’t mean you’ve lost the ability to be happy
-
How social comparison turns your internal yardstick into an external one — and why there will always be someone ahead as long as you allow that to be the measure
-
The difference between need, preference, and desire — and how confusing the three can lead you to pursue goals that will never satisfy you
-
The psychological opportunity cost: the question that reveals what you’re giving up every time you say “yes” to a new goal
-
Why the illusion of arrival — the belief that the next achievement will finally resolve the feeling of lack — is one of the most costly traps of modern life
-
How to distinguish contentment from complacency — and why you can want more without having to disdain what you already have
Who is this book for?
For those who have already achieved a lot and still feel empty.
For those who are tired of living in a waiting room, postponing life until after the next goal.
For those who want to understand why the promotion, the money, the house, or the relationship didn’t produce the permanent feeling of arrival they promised.
For those who suspect that life doesn’t have to be an endless race — but don’t know how to stop without feeling like they’re giving up.
What this book is not
It is not a manifesto against ambition.
It is not a defense of mediocrity.
It is not an invitation to settle for little.
It is not a book that tells you to want less.
It is a book that asks: how much is enough? And it offers criteria so that you yourself can answer — without guilt, without dogma, and without giving up what truly matters.
What you will find
-
A deep analysis of the psychological mechanisms that make enough seem insufficient — based on research on adaptation, social comparison, motivation, and well-being
-
Reflections on identity, status, deservingness, and the price of being someone
-
The Enough Test: a practical eight-question tool to use before any important decision
-
A new way to look at the next goal — without turning it into a debt, an obligation, or a proof of worth
A question that can change everything
In the end, this book converges on a single question:
If I say yes to this, what life am I choosing along with it?
Because enough is not only what you can achieve.
It is what, once achieved, still leaves room to live the life you truly wanted to build.
