The Science of Companion Animal Care explores the principles behind responsible pet care and explains how everyday decisions about nutrition, housing, hygiene, behavior, exercise, enrichment, preventive care, and the living environment can influence an animal’s overall well-being.
Rather than treating pet care as a collection of routines, this book looks at the science behind those routines. It helps readers understand why animals have different nutritional requirements, how their environments affect behavior, why exercise and mental stimulation matter, and how observation can help owners recognize changes that may require professional attention.
The book is written in an accessible way, making scientific concepts easier to understand without requiring an advanced background in animal science or veterinary medicine. It is suitable for readers who want to become more knowledgeable, observant, and responsible companion-animal caregivers.
Inside this book, you’ll explore:
- The fundamental principles of companion-animal care
- Animal biology and how it influences daily care requirements
- Nutritional needs and responsible feeding practices
- Fresh water, feeding routines, and healthy body condition
- Housing, environmental comfort, cleanliness, and safety
- Exercise, play, enrichment, and mental stimulation
- Understanding natural behaviors and species-specific needs
- Social interaction, communication, and human-animal relationships
- Recognizing signs of stress, discomfort, and behavioral changes
- Basic hygiene and grooming considerations
- Preventive care and the importance of regular veterinary attention
- Responsible handling and ways to reduce fear and unnecessary stress
- Creating safer and more stimulating home environments
- Aging, changing care needs, and supporting quality of life
- Common care mistakes and practical ways to avoid them
- Responsible ownership, welfare, and lifelong commitment
This book is for you if you are:
- A current or prospective companion-animal owner
- A beginner who wants to understand the foundations of responsible pet care
- Interested in animal behavior, biology, nutrition, and welfare
- A student exploring animal science or related subjects
- A pet caregiver looking for a science-based foundation for everyday decisions
- A teacher, educator, or animal enthusiast seeking accessible educational material
- Interested in improving the environment, enrichment, and quality of life of companion animals
Companion animals depend on people for many of their essential needs. Understanding their biology and behavior can therefore make everyday care more thoughtful, informed, and effective.
The Science of Companion Animal Care connects scientific principles with practical caregiving, helping you better understand the animals in your care and make responsible choices throughout their lives.
Learn the science. Understand the animal. Provide better care.
