8vo. 8.25 x 5.75 inches. [viii] + 152 pp. Bound in vellum, gilt. Top edge gilt. A little marking of boards and foxing of flyleaves and edges; otherwise a very good clean copy. Loosely inserted: gift transmission card from Mrs Reginald Hughes. Seven essays on historical and literary themes, four of which originally appeared in periodicals, Their titles are A Pilgrimage to Canossa, Julius II in the Stanze, Lucian's Panthea, The Battlefields Round Poitiers, A Castle in Languedoc, Of Travellers, Of Literary Immortality. It has not been possible to easily trace the identity of the author, presumably a Doctor of Civil Law. A scarce title; Library Hub lists only The British Library and Oxford as holding copies.
