Third edition (not stated but per OCLC). 303 pages. Hardcover: H 19cm x L 13cm. Original green cloth rubbed and stained; cloth loss at frayed spine ends; slender wear along board edges particularly at corners; some flaking/rubbing loss to spine's gilt stamping but all still legible; front board decorated with gilt fireplace vignette which remains reasonably bright. Toning/foxing to text block edges. Endpapers toned and soiled with some stains; old ink ownership inscription on front free endpaper; edge chipping to detached rear free endpaper; some stains and foxing to interior leaves with several creased corners; several pages at book's rear have erased pencil scribbles which can still be discerned; pages 113-144 have short tears at their upper center margins. Front hinge shaken but rear hinge completely split and in need of repair; text block has several stress points at quires but holding. Only a fair copy but still a scarce, albeit obscure, novel. Now presented in a trimmed Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids the book's binding and modestly enhances shelf presence. Part historical fiction and part fantasy, SAM WILLIAMS is set during the Civil War during which a Confederate soldier discovers "The Cave of Futurity" thereby launching into a futuristic utopian society. A Methodist minister and long-time resident of Starkville, Mississippi, Reverend William S. Harrison utilized dialect, both African American and poor white, in rendering his tale as he explains in the Preface that, he "of the manner born" wished to capture such speech and qualities of antebellum life before they fade to oblivion. Per OCLC citations, Publishing House of the M.E. Church, South (Methodist Episcopal Church) published first, second, and third editions of SAM WILLIAMS in 1892, 1894, and 1900 respectively with a 1972 fourth edition issued by Books for Libraries Press. Harrison's novel was overlooked by bibliographers Everett Bleiler ("The Checklist of Fantastic Literature") and Lyle Wright ("American Fiction"). {Lit-Shelf#3}.…
