"Few people, if any, in the past century can have had as deep a knowledge of the lives of salmon, the rivers which they frequent and the skills of a top class fisherman, but John Ashley-Cooper was the brilliant and modest possessor of all these talents, and his friends and the other readers of 'A Salmon Fisher's Odyssey' can only be immensely grateful to him for this book and the fascinating record it provides" (Sir David Wills 1996). Sir David Wills, CBE, appears on page 5 of this book. John Ashley-Cooper "has fished many rivers, in many countries, during a lifetime of fishing for salmon.
