Item description from seller

20-1/4' (wide) x 14' (tall) ship painting by Japanese maritime painter H. Shimidzu who was active in Yokohama, Japan in the 1920's and 1930's. H. Shimidzu was a Japanese maritime artist working in Yokohama during the early to mid-20th century (active the 1920s to 1930s). He was known for highly detailed gouache (an opaque watercolor) and watercolor paintings of merchant steamships and clipper ships on silk. This image, in its contemporary frame, shows the vessel at the time called the S.S. Bellingham, at the time a part of the Tacoma-Oriental Co's steamship fleet and would make cross pacific voyages. In 1937 the vessel was sold to the Waterman Steamship Co in Mobile, Alabama and during WW2 was used as a convoy ship in the Atlantic theater. The vessel was sund on September 22, 1942 by German U-Boat U-435 (Captain Siegfried Strelow), with no loss of any of the 75 crew members who were on board.
