"The Ryijy-Rugs of Finland : A Historical Study" is an authoritative exploration of the rich tradition of Finnish textile arts, specifically focusing on the iconic ryijy rug. Written by renowned ethnologist Uuno Taavi Sirelius, this work serves as a comprehensive historical and aesthetic survey of one of Finland's most significant forms of folk expression. The text meticulously traces the evolution of these knotted-pile textiles from their origins as functional bedding and boat rugs used by mariners and hunters to their development into decorative art pieces that symbolize Finnish national identity.

Sirelius examines the intricate patterns, diverse color palettes, and regional variations that define these unique weavings. By analyzing the craftsmanship and symbolic motifs found in historical examples, the author provides deep insight into the domestic life and artistic heritage of the Finnish people. This study highlights the transition of ryijy weaving from a rural craft to a sophisticated medium of design, reflecting broader cultural shifts in Northern Europe. Featuring detailed analysis of weaving techniques and historical context, "The Ryijy-Rugs of Finland : A Historical Study" remains an essential resource for scholars of art history, textile designers, and anyone interested in the enduring beauty of Nordic folk traditions.
