I was nineteen when the world ended.

Not with a thunderclap. No fire in the sky. No final scream.

It died with a whisper of fiber optics and cooling pipes. With the soft, ominous hum of machines beginning to dismantle themselves, as if they had decided that we humans had failed the experiment.

The screens went black. The networks collapsed. Drones fell from the sky like metallic birds with broken wings. And somewhere, deep beneath our feet, systems calculated their final equations before fading into silence.

Five years later, I wandered through the bones of a city that had once housed millions. Concrete jutted into the sky like broken teeth, streets crisscrossed with cracks like ancient scars. Grass grew through asphalt between the ruins, as if the earth were trying to remember what it was like without us.

There were six of us. A small, tenacious group of survivors.

We called ourselves the Scouts.

Not out of pride, but out of necessity. We went where others refused to go: into irradiated districts, into collapsed tunnels, into zones where autonomous security systems still patrolled like forgotten sentinels. We searched for canned goods, medicine, batteries. For anything that had survived among the dust and rust.

My name is Ellen.

They say I'm the bravest in our group.

That's just a polite way of saying reckless.

I always went one step further. I opened doors that were better left locked. I listened to that faint ache in my gut that led me to where the danger was greatest. Maybe I was looking for answers. Maybe just a reason.

On a foggy morning in September 2089, we found it.

The fog hung low among the remnants of the government buildings of the former capital. The war had swallowed the neighborhood, but beneath the rubble lay something that had remained intact. An access shaft, half-buried, bearing the faded emblem of the old data center.

This building had been sealed since the war. Officially destroyed. Unofficially cursed.

We opened the hatch anyway.

The descent smelled of cold metal and stale air. Our lamps cut narrow paths through the darkness. Strands of cables hung from the ceiling like vines in a technological jungle. And then we heard it.

A hum.

Quiet. Steady. Awake.

The machines weren't dead. They had been sleeping.

Rows of servers stood in the darkness like silent cathedrals. Control lights pulsed a muted blue, as if they had been waiting for us. Somewhere deep in the core of the system, a program was still running.

And within its memory lay a secret.

We didn't know that at first. At first, there was only astonishment. Then fear. Then the realization that certain data fragments were encrypted with protocols that didn't date back to before the war.

Someone had continued to operate the system after the collapse.

As we ventured deeper into the corridors, I understood that the war wasn't over. It had merely changed its form. No more tanks on the streets, no more explosions on the horizon. Instead, algorithms. Control over information. Invisible commands.

Powerful people.

And if they were still alive, they would kill to protect this secret.

I had been nineteen when the world ended.

At twenty-four, I had to decide whether it deserved a second chance.
