Hard Cover. Condition: Fair. Heavy wear to leather spine, torn, soiled boards; front hinge is separated and pulled away, detached. The pages are tanned, a couple of tears. About 600 pages total. Contents include nominations, winning stallions, champions, calendar, members of the Jockey Club, races and rules, steeplechase and more. The binding is poor but a useful reference copy. All of the pages are intact and the cover is intact and the spine may show signs of wear. The book may have minor markings which are not specifically mentioned. An acceptable condition book. An ex-library rebind into green half-leather with the usual amount of stamps. No dust jacket. Heavy wear to the leather sections, with rubbing and splitting to the edges. The binding throughout is decent. The internal contents show a typical amount of tanning and foxing, particularly the advertisement pages in the front and rear, but also remain clean and unfaded. Measures approximately 4.5 x 6.75 inches. Cover label reads, "Spring Edition. Ruff's Guide to the Turf, 1862. In cloth, Price Half-a-Crown. Free by Post, 2s, 8d. "Sporting Review" Office, 246, Strand, London, W.C." Blind stamp of W. H. Smith & Son on first free flyleaf with a list of books being sold at reduced prices by that bookdealer tipped onto the same flyleaf. Bookplate of Edward Lasker of the California Thoroughbred Breeders Foundation is laid down on inside of front cover. Someone has written the date 1861 in ink on the cover label; top quarter inch of cloth covered spine is missing; guide shows evidence of being used with a weak interior front hinge, but is still together and, overall, is in VG condition. [24-412] The sub-title adequately sums up what's included in the Guide: "Containing The Nominations for 1862; Entries for the Great Stakes in 1863; also, A Calendar of the Races and Steeple Chases in Great Britain and Ireland, 1861-62.
