Though plate for 27th Quatrain has small surface loss to tip of lower corner, this is a nice clean crisp copy internally, in original cream decorative cloth gilt, some wear to extremities, top of spine and corners rubbed, spine slightly darklened with some minor wear, some light browning to extremities of boards, gilt bright, very good. Unpaginated; 61 leaves printed recto only with pale green foliate border to text. 20 colour plates by Dulac tipped-in to decorative mounts, each with captioned tissue guard. Publishers' maroon cloth with gilt titles to spine and elaborate elephants and peacocks design in gilt to upper board. Repairs to spine head and tail; cover cloth soiled particularly to spine with minor wear to corners. Later endpapers. Half-title and page edges toned; scattered light foxing. Annotation in pencil to final stanza (correcting the translation). "Printed from the Second Edition by Kind Permission of Messrs Macmillan & Co" to verso title page. Text follows the second edition of Fitzgerald's translation, rendered into 100 quatrains and illustrated by with 20 tipped-in colour plates each behind a captioned tissue-guard. Publisher's cream cloth boards, spine slightly soiled, with elaborate Persian-style design in gilt to the front board along with gilt lettering, also found on the spine which is less elaborately decorated with a smaller vignette. Text on each page framed within green decorative border and plates set within brown patterned frames. Scattered spots of foxing to the text pages, plates unaffected. No old inscriptions of other annotation. Undated, but c1910. A VG+ copy of this fabulously illustrated work of Persian quatrains attributed to Omar Khayyam and first translated into English by Edward Fitzgeraldin 1859. There have been many editions of this work illustrated by most of the great 20th century exponents including Rackham, Rene Bull, Florence Lundborg, Gilbert James and, the best of all, Dulac. Book.
