Item description from seller

No. 37 in the series Travaux D'Humanisme et Renaissance. 233 pages with B/W illustrations, bibliography, and index. Usual ex-library markings. It appears that the library thought this this soft-cover edition important enough to protect it with a post-publication hardcover binding in deep blue cloth with gilt lettering on the spine (there was alsi a post-binding correction to th3 spine lettering, as picture). Edgewear, esp. at spine-ends. Some shallow interior creasing, as pictured. "This scholarly treatment of a somewhat bizarre subject is a pioneer work and is based upon extensive research in a wide variety of sources. The various elements of the royal funeral ceremony which was utilized in France during the Renaissance are analyzed in a wealth of detail, and the author attempts with considerable success to discover the meanings which contemporaries attached to various elements of the ceremony. Since royal funerals attained the apogee of their development in France during the Renaissance, the book is to a large extent a study in the symbolism of the period. Attention is also given to the ways in which medieval elements of ceremonial were deliberately changed to conform with the humanists' ideas concerning the funerals of the ancient Roman Emperors. For this reviewer, one of the major contributions of the book is its analysis of the constitutional implications of the funeral ceremony, where the transitory, mortal nature of the monarch was increasingly counterbalanced by elements of ceremonial which symbolized the impersonal continuity of the state system. The work will thus be of interest to a wide variety of students of the French Renaissance. A number of its major themes were anticipated in The King's Two Bodies by Ernst Kantorowicz, who, however, fully acknowledged his debt to his student, Ralph Giesey." - William F. Church review in Renaissance Quarterly.…
