1913. 11.5 x 7.5 cm folded Royal Automobile Club membership card, dated 1913; 6 x 8.5 cm black and white photograph of Hanifin on his Yale motorcycle in what appears to be France; and a 34.5 x 26 cm certificate from the State of Illinois licensing Hanifin to practice architecture in 1916. Membership card: Some rubbing to the outside, otherwise in excellent condition. Photograph: 3 mm nick to left side of photograph. License certificate: Some toning to paper; three horizontal creases from being folded twice; clear tape on recto of certificate where crease began to tear; clear tape in five places on verso of certificate where creases started to tear; small nick to upper right hand side of paper; faded stamp on verso acknowledging payment for license fee. In 1912, Arthur C. Hanifin won the Traveling Scholarship of the Chicago Architectural Club for his work "A Theatre in a Large City Park", which gave him $600.00 with which to travel Europe in order to study its architecture. The following year he was granted membership in the Royal Automobile Club, which presumably was during his tour of Europe. Upon his return, Hanifin was granted a license to practice architecture in the State of Illinois in 1916. He was a member of The Chicago Architectural Club for five years, and had an office in the Monadnock Building in Chicago. A promising, yet relatively unknown draftsman; these three items offer a small glimpse of the life of a midwest architect. . Unbound. Very Good.…
