Add to basketRoughing It and the Innocents at Home by Mark Twain, published in London by George Routledge and Sons, Broadway, Ludgate Hill, in 1882. With 200 original illustrations by F. A. Fraser, engraved and printed by Dalziel Brothers at the Camden Press.
The book presents in fair condition consistent with its age. The front board and spine retain their decorative blocking, with the gilt titling remaining legible. The rear board shows significant cloth loss and staining, and the spine exhibits considerable wear and fading. The binding remains structurally intact. The pages are generally sound, with toning consistent with age. Notably, a number of leaves remain uncut along the top edge, indicating the book has seen minimal reading since its publication in 1882.
Roughing It was first published in 1872 and draws on Twain's experiences travelling through the American West and Hawaii in the 1860s. The Routledge illustrated edition, with Fraser's 200 engravings executed by the celebrated Dalziel Brothers, was a significant British presentation of the work. The Dalziel firm, founded in 1839, were the foremost wood engravers of the Victorian era, their work appearing in editions of Dickens, Tennyson, and Carroll among many others.
