Someone attacked Arden Rivers outside the bar. Whoever did it chose the wrong woman.
Arden fights back, but the attack leaves her wounded-and raises questions more dangerous than any simple answer. The stranger's voice was unfamiliar. The evidence refuses to point cleanly toward one enemy. Somewhere in the shadows, the man who has been watching Arden saw violence he did not set in motion.
Back in New York, Arden refuses to let fear dismantle the life she has claimed. Gideon Blackwell is equally determined to uncover who hurt her, but every trail leads deeper into the machinery of his family's past: vanished records, false authority, calculated intimidation, and an inheritance built from more than money.
As threats converge around them, the danger grows increasingly intimate. Carefully chosen gifts carry hidden intentions. Old harm resurfaces beneath new names. Someone who has studied Arden mistakes knowledge for intimacy, while powerful people inside the Blackwell orbit continue protecting secrets capable of destroying far more than a family reputation.
Arden and Gideon have already chosen each other. Now they must build safety without surrendering choice, confront what survival leaves behind, and keep fear from becoming another force that governs their lives.
To claim their future, they will have to separate one threat from another and expose the system that allowed both to flourish...before the shadows close around everyone they love.
The Rose and the Shadows is an atmospheric, open-door modern gothic romantic suspense about obsession, trauma recovery, inherited power, institutional harm, found family, autonomy, and dangerous devotion.
This is Book Two of the complete Storm & Shadow Duology and must be read after The Storm and the Rose. Arden and Gideon's story concludes with a happily-ever-after.
The Midnight Edition is the definitive second edition of the novel.
