5-STAR review on READERS' FAVOURITE
Includes a JIGSAW PUZZLE for you to print and play
This is a collection of very short stories so you can read a page-a-day with very young kids
Whether you wish to introduce cultural diversity, or encourage children to travel or see exotic places through a book, this will encourage youngsters to explore the world with a new friend...
Join Roo as he recalls the many ups and downs of his life on the roads of Colombo (the commercial capital of Sri Lanka). From road races, to Polo tournaments, to animal rescues, this little vehicle has lived life to its fullest. Experience the joys and perils of Tuk Tuks on the streets, and learn many life lessons along the way with this courageous Tuk Tuk who is always ready to lend a helping hand and spread some cheer. You are never too little to make a difference...
Also known as trishaws or three-wheelers, Tuk Tuks are a common sight in the eastern world. All foreign visitors are encouraged to ride a Tuk Tuk at least once when they visit Sri Lanka: but the recommendation also goes with a warning to HOLD ON TIGHT!
All the incidents in this book are adapted from news stories and Facebook posts of real-life Tuk Tuk drivers who are unafraid to be more than just a means of transportation.
So, (I'd say 'buckle your seatbelt' but there are no seatbelts in Tuk Tuks...!), enjoy some of the sights and sounds of beautiful Colombo and its wonderful people as you read this book that also teaches you - you are never too little to make a difference!
FROM THE AUTHOR
A Note on Terminology in the Book
There are a few Sri Lankan terms mentioned in the story which need explanation -
Avurudhu - The Sinhalese and Tamil New Year which is celebrated in Sri Lanka. It occurs following the movement of the sun across zodiac signs in April. This festival is celebrated with many rituals and games.
Baila - Sinhalese dance music. The genre originated centuries ago with Portuguese settlers. The 6/8 Kaffirinha rhythm is adapted to Sinhala lyrics.
What is a Tuk Tuk?
Known in the western hemisphere as 'Auto Rickshaws', Tuk Tuks gained their nickname due to the iconic sound they make. A Tuk Tuk ride can be deafening, jarring and teeth-rattling depending on the make and model of your ride, but it is also unforgettable!
They are used in Asia, Africa and South America for Taxi services. They are traditionally three-wheeled motor vehicles, but the four-wheel models can also be seen (and heard). In case you are wondering - Roo is a three-wheeled Asian Tuk Tuk.
AMAZON REVIEWS
"A lovely story with words that kids love to imitate and sound out. While they have fun, they learn about a positive and helpful life approach. A great conversation starter to the acts of kindness activities." Books2Read
"As an adult, I just learned about a vehicle that I never knew existed. It's a very interesting story, and it teaches kids AND adults a few things. This would be an excellent bedtime story for kids of all ages!" Bill Graper
