Written by one of the greatest innovators of modern literature THE ROMANTIC is the first volume of Broch celebrated triptych THE SLEEPWALKERS. Set in 1888, THE ROMANTIC is the story of Joachim von Pasenow, a neurotic young army officer caught between the demands of the flesh in the seductive form of a Bohemian chorus girl and duty towards to the suitable girl favoured by his family. Each of the SLEEPWALKER novels can be read independently of the others, but read together they paint a devastating picture of Germany's decline into barbarism.
