Print on Demand. This book challenges the traditional belief that ancient Greek and Latin poets chose between the singular and plural forms of a word based solely on metrical convenience. The author presents an extensive analysis of plural forms in dactylic poetry, demonstratig that poets often used them because of their meaning. The author explores a range of topics: from well-established cases of contextual meaning, where the plural emphasizes concepts of space, abundance, or general truths; to more nuanced distinctions, where plural forms highlight emotional intensity or imply the extension of a concept or object. The book's meticulous philological analysis and insightful discussion of poetic language will appeal to classicists and scholars of comparative literature alike. It sheds new light on a fundamental aspect of classical poetry, offering a more nuanced understanding of how ancient poets crafted their verses. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
