Stiff unmarked book in glossy dust jacket; 484 pages; Rolf Toman’s Romanesque: Architecture, Sculpture, Painting is an opulent 448-page visual compendium dedicated exclusively to the Romanesque era (ca. 1000—1250 CE) , the first pan-European style of medieval art that fused Christian theology with architectural innovation and narrative sculpture. Toman, a veteran art book editor renowned for his epochal overviews (e. G. , Gothic, Neoclassicism) , curates essays from nine specialists to illuminate how Romanesque art expressed the era's spiritual fervor, feudal anxieties, and monastic ideals. With over 500 stunning reproductions (predominantly color) by master photographer Achim Bednorz, this oversized hardcover (ca. 10 x 13 inches, ~3.5 kg) transforms the reader into a pilgrim traversing Europe's stone cathedrals and illuminated manuscripts.
