Item description from seller

Limited edition, number 864 of 1,200 copies. Gautier's novel was originally serialized in Le Moniteur universel in 1857, and published in book form the following year. This edition is beautifully illustrated by the French painter, Georges Rochegrosse (1859-1938), who specialized in historical art and illustrations. Claire Lyu, "Unswathing the Mummy: Body, Knowledge, and Writing in Gautier's 'Le Roman de la momie'", Nineteenth-Century French Studies, 2005, vol. 33, no. 3. Octavo (234 x 165 mm). Engraved frontispiece, 18 plates, several in-text colour illustrations, colour illustrated half-title and title page, flourished initials. Contemporary brown levant half morocco, spine lettered in gilt, raised bands, covers ruled in gilt, brown cloth sides, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, original front cover and spine, illustrated by Rochegrosse, bound at rear. Extremities rubbed, closed vertical tear to front free blank near gutter, illustrations bright. A very good copy.…
