Robert Smithson ( Passaic, New Jersey, 2 gennaio 1938 -  Amarillo  Texas, 20 luglio 1973) è stato un influente scultore e pittore statunitense, internazionalmente celebre come uno dei pionieri e massimi esponenti della Land Art. La sua opera più iconica è Spiral Jetty (1970), una monumentale spirale di fango, cristalli di sale e roccia basaltica lunga oltre 460 metri, situata nel Grande Lago Salato dello Utah- Tra le sue principali mostre si ricordano: Asphalt Rundown (1969) alla Galleria L'Attico, Roma - Robert Smithson: A Retrospective View (1982): Presentata come mostra ufficiale al Padiglione degli Stati Uniti durante la 40ª Biennale di Venezia  -:  Robert Smithson Retrospective (2004?2005): Organizzata dal MOCA (Museum of Contemporary Art di Los Angeles), considerata la retrospettiva definitiva sull'artista.
