FORWARD This writing, although fiction, has a basis in fact. Our story involves the Mississippi River, the events thathappened during the 1850s, including the murder ofColonel Davenport;the slave issue; the destruction of the steamer"Effie Afton" and the burning of the bridge;the river pilots; the trial; and Abe Lincoln, the lawyer defending the bridge. Some of the characters in the book are the author'sown idea of who they were and how certain historicalevents might have evolved through their story.
About the Author: Ted McElhiney is no stranger to the Mississippi River. His father was born and raised on the Father of all Waters at Pontoosuc, Illinois, a sleepy little village which had, as its main industry commercial fishing and hunting. Ted's father, grandfather, and uncle, when not fishing during winter months, would guide wealthy Chicago businessmen onto spotted islands in the Mississippi for goose and duck hunting. The area where his father grew up was only a few miles from Nauvoo, Illinois and the area where the "Banditti" terrorized the inhabitants for many years in the early 1800's.
