A culinary journey from ancient to modern Greece
Food is never simply food.
In Greece, it has always been part of something greater, a way of life, a social ritual, a connection to nature, a source of health, and a reflection of philosophy and culture.
From the banquets of Ancient Greece th the humble family table of today, Rituals and Wisdom of the Greek Table explores the remarkable story of Greek food and the ideas that have shaped it for thousands of years.
This is a journey through the foods, traditions, beliefs and wisdom of the Greek world. It explores the importance of bread, olive oil, wine and honey; the influence of philosophers and physicians; the writings of ancient food writers; the evolution of Greek cooking; and enduring traditions the continue to connect modern Greeks to with their ancient past.
Discover the thoughts of philosophers such as Pythagoras, Plato and Epicurus, the medical wisdom of Hippocrates and Galen and the observations of ancient writers who recorded the foods, customs and culinary life of Greece
From ancient markets and symposia to village kitchens, bakeries, tavernas and modern Greek homes, this book reveals how food has shaped Greek identity across the centuries.
