Turn the Risk-Based Process Safety Framework Into a Program You Can Actually Run
Understanding the four pillars and twenty elements of Risk-Based Process Safety is one thing. Applying them under real operating pressure—through effective audits, meaningful metrics, practical worksheets, and defensible decisions—is another.
This handbook closes that implementation gap. It transforms the complete RBPS framework into a practical management system that process safety teams can build, audit, and continuously improve.
Inside, you will find:
- Practical implementation guidance for all twenty RBPS elements across the four pillars.
- Worked numerical examples covering culture-maturity scoring, compliance risk indexing, competency gaps, audit sampling, and other essential calculations.
- A master twenty-element audit checklist, KPI and metrics worksheets, management-of-change templates, and an incident root-cause worksheet.
- “Mistake autopsy” case studies showing how programs drift off track—and how to identify weaknesses before they contribute to an incident.
- Guidance for aligning one process safety program with OSHA PSM, EPA RMP, and the European Seveso III Directive.
- Practice problems with complete answer keys for building and verifying practical skills.
- Dual US customary and metric units, plus a glossary and detailed topic index for fast reference.
Key topics include: process safety culture and leadership, compliance gap analysis, competency assurance, workforce involvement, process knowledge management, PHA, HAZOP, LOPA, operating procedures, safe work practices, asset integrity, contractor management, management of change, operational readiness, conduct of operations, emergency management, incident investigation, leading and lagging indicators, auditing, and management review.
Written for process safety engineers, plant and operations managers, EHS/HSE professionals, corporate safety leaders, PSM/RBPS coordinators, engineering students, and practitioners throughout the chemical, refining, oil and gas, and process industries.
Whether you are establishing a new RBPS program, strengthening an existing system, or preparing for an audit, this handbook provides the calculations, templates, and structured methodology needed to move from framework to functioning management system.
Build a process safety program your organization can apply, measure, audit, and improve—starting now.
