The Rise of the Robins tells the story of Hull Kingston Rovers' most successful season in modern history, offering fans an in-depth journey through a year that captured the imagination of the rugby league world.
From exciting rugby on the pitch to many home sell-outs and ambitious off-field projects, Hull KR's rise culminated in a historic first-ever Super League Grand Final appearance. This remarkable season cemented the club's re-emergence as a major force in British rugby league.
Author Dan Crowther meticulously explores the factors behind this transformation, charting Hull KR's rise from their struggles at the turn of the millennium to their return as serious contenders. With exclusive insights from CEO Paul Lakin, who shares his thoughts on the emotional highs and lows of the season, and COO Craig Franklin, who discusses the club’s ongoing projects and exciting future plans, The Rise of the Robins offers a rare look behind the scenes.
A heartfelt tribute is also paid to Hull KR legend Phil Lowe, who sadly passed away in 2024. In what is the most detailed biography of Lowe ever written, Crowther chronicles his life and career, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
For fans of Hull KR and rugby league alike, The Rise of the Robins is a must-read.
In addition to a full report on each match, the book includes:
- More biographies: While 2024 will mainly be remembered for its on-field success, the club also mourned former players and personnel off the pitch. From the man who played an integral role in the most famous Hull KR play in history, to the administrators who kept Rovers afloat, Dan Crowther honours each individual who passed away.
- A full breakdown of Hull KR's history in a franchising environment: with IMG and RFL on the brink of reimplementing a grading system, Crowther explores the Robins' journey thorough the franchising landscape from when it was first announced in 2005, through to the final period of 2012-14.
- The most comprehensive coverage of Hull KR's partnership with Port Moresby Vipers: Rovers launched a groundbreaking partnership with the Vipers, a project that could change many lives forever. In The Rise of the Robins, discover how the partnership was formed, how club officials became overnight celebrities, the goals of the agreement and much more.
- The definitive history of Hull KR's relationship with Papua New Guinea: Almost three decades since John Okul and Stanley Gene signed with the Robins, Hull KR's footprint is alive and well in Papua New Guinea. Crowther traces the roots of Rovers' special relationship with the country, detailing its origins and how it continues to this day.
