Synopsis:

Presents a backstage look at the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of creating the Jerry Springer Show

Review: The Jerry Springer Show is the fastest-rising show in the history of American television and was the first for 10 years to knock Oprah off the number one slot. This slick behind-the- scenes account tells how they did it. It's all here from the man who married his horse--"although some might refer to this act as bestiality .... you could genuinely tell that they were like any other couple in love"--to the woman who weighed 1600 lbs and who, "sadly, died shortly after the show was taped". We see Jerry Springer metamorphosing from a young lawyer who ran for congress into the man who brings us a father and his stepson fighting on stage over a woman because the woman happened to be the father's ex-wife and his stepson's fiancée. Think about it. Springer, as ever, strikes a careful balance between wry amusement and thoughtful concern and even manages to add a humane final word to editions as apparently dumfounding as "I have sex with my twin" and "I'm here to stop your wedding". The show is painstakingly professional and obviously compulsive. No surprise then that the book is as well. --Nick Wroe
