Print on Demand. This book describes a new helium cryostat design, which at the time was innovative for its incorporation of a high field superconducting solenoid mounted at right angles to its vertical axis. This novel cryostat formed part of the transportable National Bureau of Standards 3He refrigerator and was successfully employed for nuclear orientation studies at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment in Harwell, England. The book discusses the construction of the cryostat in depth. It also describes the challenges faced by the author and their team in constructing such a cryostat with the technology available at the time. The cryostat design detailed in this book provided a solution to a common design problem encountered in nuclear orientation studies, simplifying magnet requirements and sample mounting while reducing the material required for beam access. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The cryostat has two separate liquid nitrogen baths, a large one having a capacity of 16 liters and a small one with a capacity of liters. Whereas the large bath and its extended copper radiation shield serve the usual purpose, the small bath serves as both a radiation trap and a thermal ground at 77 K for all the tubes going into and making up the main 4he bath. The latter, when normally filled to a distance of h in. From.the bottom of the small nitrogen bath, contains 18 liters.
