Print on Demand. This book examines the principles of rifling in artillery and small arms. The author, an experienced gunnery expert, presents a detailed exploration of the science behind imparting a rotary motion to projectiles and the resulting benefits. Through a combination of theory and experiments, the book analyzes the impact of factors such as bullet size and shape, velocity, and the pitch of the rifling on projectile stability and accuracy. The author argues that a precise understanding of these principles is crucial for designing effective rifled weapons and unlocking their full potential. By providing a comprehensive examination of the subject, this book serves as an invaluable resource for gunsmiths, artillery enthusiasts, and anyone interested in the science of firearms. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The expanding projectiles represented in the Plates of the last edition, were - as there stated - merely experimental, and described for the purpose of illustrating certain principles, rather than with the View of recommending the projectiles for practical adoption. It has always appeared to me that the employment of any system which entailed the use of lead coated projectiles could only be advocated in the absence of a better, or, until a more satisfactory system could be worked out though I confess that, at the time this work was written, I saw no way to the solution of the problem. Since then, however, I have succeeded in perfecting a system which, I believe, will be found to meet all the requirements of our Service, without necessitating the use of lead-coated projectiles.
