About this Item
Third edition 1978 hardcover with an attractive black and gilt illustration of a double bridle & spur embossed into the frt board. Red cloth covered boards double ruled in black, with good gilt still visible on the darkened backstrip. Book extremities bumped with upper tips lightly rubbed and spine end cloth split and frayed. Red cloth grubby in places but still a desirable personal working copy. Three names on front endpapers, small water stain on foot of frt and rear endpapers showing some red color bleed from the fabric. Front mark continues only to the contents page, rear mark extends about 10 pages in from rear board (only on the very foot of the pages). The text is tight and bright with good hinges on the cream endpapers, no major soil or tears found in the 251 pp text that has a 32 pp catalog in the rear of other Chapman and Hall offerings. We are confident this was little used as the text is crisp and stiff. It is difficult to 'flip' through the leaves as they've not been handled a lot. There is moderate foxing on the torn tissue and the engraved frontis that it guards. Book is illustrated with 8 b/w steel engravings. Also present is a diamond shaped printers label at the foot of the rear pastedown from Leighton Son and Hodge. An all-round book of riding and horse sport in the country. Chapters include: Kindness, Coercion, The Use of the Bridle, The Abuse of the Spur, Hand, Seat, Valor, Discretion, Irish Hunters, Thorough-bred Horses, Riding to Fox-Hounds, Riding at Stag-Hounds, The Provinces, The Shires. Herein we enjoy rollicking accounts of the authors exploits and reminiscences of his sporting life in the hunt field. The author was a Scottish novelist and a sporting poet. George John Whyte-Melville (1821-1878) achieved immediate success as a writer of fox-hunting stories with his first novel Digby Grand in 1854. A true lover of the chase till the end, He died in 1878 while foxhunting. Seller Inventory # 46978
