Riding Pisces brings together a number of hard-to-find and uncollected texts from almost the full extent of Yang Lian's career: from Masks and Crocodiles (Sydney, 1990-although the translations here are new), from the out-of-print collection Non-Person Singular (London, 1994), from Notes of a Blissful Ghost, (Hong Kong, 2002), from the Sailor's Home six-handed anthology (Shearsman Books, 2005), and from the as-yet-uncollected Dark Blue Verses.

About the Authors

Yang Lian was born in Switzerland in 1955, and grew up in Beijing. He began writing when he was sent to the countryside in the 1970s. On his return to Beijing he became one of the founders of the 'Misty' school of contemporary Chinese poetry. Among other things, Yang Lian is known for his poem sequences and long poems which display a profound understanding of, and creative links with, Classical Chinese poetry. His poems became well-known and influential inside and outside of China in the 1980s, especially when his sequence 'Norilang' was criticized by the Chinese government during the 'Anti-Spiritual Pollution' movement.Yang Lian was invited to visit Australia and New Zealand in 1988 and became a poet in exile after the Tiananmen massacre. Since that time, he has continued to write and speak out as a highly individual voice in world literature, politics and culture. Yang Lian has published twelve collections of poems, two collections of prose and many essays (selected into several selections) in Chinese. His work has also been translated into more than thirty languages, including English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Arabic, Central and Eastern European languages.His work has been described as being "like MacDiarmid meets Rilke with Samurai sword drawn!", as "one of the most representative voices of Chinese literature" and as "one of the great world poets of our era".

Brian Holton taught Chinese in Edinburgh, Newcastle and Durham, and was first Director of the Chinese-English Translating and Interpreting programme at Newcastle. He then taught Chinese-English translation in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He has published a dozen books of translations of the poetry of Yang Lian, as well as many classical and modern poems and short stories, as well as the novel 'Paper Cuts', by Leung Ping Kwan. He has translated for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and has performed at major literary festivals throughout the world. His work has won a Commendation in the Times Stephen Spender prize in 2012, and was Runner-up in the Modern Poetry in Translation Prize in 2011. He lives in Melrose with an improbably large number of musical instruments.

Statutory right to withdraw

You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.

The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.

To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.

To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.

Effects of withdrawal

If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).

We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.

We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.

We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.

We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.

You shall send back the goods or hand them over to GreatBookPricesUK, Castle Donington, Derby, United Kingdom, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.

Exceptions to the right of withdrawal

The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
