A mid-eighteenth century almanac, one of the earliest to be published, written under the curious pseudonym Cardanus Rider. The 1744 almanac of 'Rider's British Merlin', 1744 being a leap year.'Rider's British Merlin' was one of the earliest almanacs to be publishers, as well as being one of the longest running, being published from 1656 to at least 1830.As a typical almanac, 'British Merlin' included information on the calendar and holidays for the year, as well as astronomical and astrological information. More uniquely Rider offers advice on what not to eat and drink, monthly horticultural notes, and how to keep in good health.By Cardanus Rider, which is generally considered to be the pseudonym of Richard Saunders, an English physician and astrologer.Pagination skips from page 116 to page 120, text is continuous.Seven pages of adverts to the rear. In a full calf binding. Externally, smart. A few minor spots and marks to the boards and spine. Light bumping to the extremities. Boards have sprung a little. Front endpaper has been excised. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age toned and clean with the occasional spot. Stamp to the title page. Very Good Indeed.
