Original publisher's blue blind-stamped cloth with decorative embossed panels and gilt lettering to the spine. Third edition of one of the best-known sermon collections by nineteenth-century Presbyterian evangelist Rev. Daniel Baker (1791–1857), founding president of Austin College in Texas and one of the leading revival preachers of the American South during the era of the Second Great Awakening. Title page reads: Revival Sermons. First Series. By the Rev. Daniel Baker, D.D., President of Austin College, Texas, Formerly Pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church, Washington City. With an Appendix. Third Edition, with Additions. Philadelphia: William S. Martien, 1855. The copyright page records entry in 1854, while this copy was issued in 1855 as the expanded third edition. The publisher's advertisement notes that the first edition appeared in 1846 and was followed by a second edition the same year due to strong demand before this enlarged edition was produced. Contains thirteen sermons including: Truth and Excellence of the Christian Religion The Greatness of God Christ the Mediator The Uses of the Law The Sinner Weighed and Found Wanting The Character and Reward of the Earthly Minded The Deluge War in Heaven On Seeking the Lord The Duty of Coming to Christ Vain Excuses Idleness Reproved The Necessity of Preparation for Death followed by an appendix containing "Letter to a Christian Brother in New York" and "Interesting Recollections." Historical Importance Daniel Baker was among the most influential Presbyterian revivalists of antebellum America. His ministry stretched across Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Texas during the height of the Second Great Awakening. In addition to extensive evangelistic work throughout the South, he became the founding president of Austin College, helping establish Presbyterian higher education in Texas. His revival preaching and missionary labors made him one of the best-known evangelical ministers of his generation. This volume captures the theology and revival preaching that shaped American Protestantism in the decades immediately preceding the Civil War and represents an important example of nineteenth-century American religious publishing. Store description
Welcome to The Hidden History of Books, where every volume has a story waiting to be rediscovered. As a retired librarian with a background in scholarly research and book provenance, I specialize in rare books and first editions that span all genres — from the overlooked and obscure to the culturally iconic. My inventory is carefully sourced from estate sales and private collections, with a focus on books that carry the quiet weight of time, ownership, and intellectual legacy. I believe a book’s value lies not just in its content or rarity, but in the lives it has touched along the way — authors, owners, annotators, and collectors. That belief informs everything I do. You can count on: Conservative grading — no surprises, no exaggerations. I highlight flaws openly and describe condition with care. Detailed listings with a focus on historical and bibliographic context when available. Fast, safe shipping using USPS Media Mail and secure packaging to protect your purchase. Whether you’re a collector, a scholar, or a fellow lover of forgotten shelves, I invite you to browse the catalog and uncover the hidden histories that live between the covers.…
