From the Author
The intention of this volume is to provide the reader with a basic competency in applying and interpreting the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO PI-R) in both a clinical and research context. The NEO PI-R is rapidly becoming one of the most frequently used assessment instruments in the field of personality assessment. One of the reasons for this is that it is the only commercially available measure designed to operationalize the constructs of the five-factor model of personality (FFM), a comprehensive individual-differences taxonomy. This book is aimed at clinicians and graduate students and provides a thorough overview of where the FFM has come from and the value of its applications in clinical, applied, and cross-cultural contexts. Numerous interpretive examples are presented employing both clinical and nonclinical cases. There is also a chapter on using the rater version of the instrument in clinical work with couples. Finally, for those with research interests, there is a chapter which outlines how to employ the NEO PI-R to its fullest advantage in a number of contexts, with a special eye towards conducting program evaluations that address issues raised by managed care and third-party providers. Computer programs and questionnaires are provided as guidelines for doing this type of work. I have tried to make this volume reader-friendly by presenting the material in an engaging and readable manner. I hope it will become an indispensible desk-top reference for psychologists, counselors, psychiatric nurses, social workers, and pastoral counselors.
