Item description from seller

The second edition of this scarce review of the works of the Royal Society of London, concerning arts, antiquities, medicine, zoophytes, animals and more, carried out by Sir John Hill. The second edition. First published in 1751. Bound in half calf with paper-covered boards. Scarce work, in any early edition.Written by the botanist, playwright and apothecary, Sir John Hill, who was known for his illustrated botanical compendium 'The Vegetable System', as well as for being a somewhat controversial figure. Hill believed that certain bodies, including the Royal Society, did not give him the recognition he deserved, and therefore he often led pamphlet campaigns against them. Publishing under a pseudonym, Hill wrote many critical articles broadcasting his opinions, detailing the lack of scientific standards of the Royal Society. This particular review is complete in eight parts, examining different papers of the Arts, Antiquities, Medicine, Miracles, Zoophytes, Animals, Vegetables and Minerals, published by the Royal Society of London. With a preface to the front and a contents to the rear. Bound in half calf with paper-covered boards. Externally, very good indeed, with light bumping to the extremities and a little rubbing to boards. A touch of fading to the spine. Endpapers have been renewed and blanks removed. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with the occasional spot ot handling mark. Very Good Indeed.…
