Print on Demand. This book explores the natural revegetation of overgrazed areas of mountain bunchgrass, focusing on the Wallowa Mountains in northeastern Oregon. The author, an expert ecologist, conducted a detailed study in 1907 to ascertain the most advantageous grazing practices to restore the overgrazed areas without disrupting the local economy. The study examines the dominant grazing plants, their seed habits, and their regeneration rates under various grazing intensities. The book presents a practical solution to the revegetation problem, considering factors such as soil conditions, forage value, and seed production of different plant species. Its insights are significant for range management and the preservation of overgrazed lands. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

As illustrated by conditions in the National Forests, overgrazing may exist in various degrees and produce results of varying serious ness. Natural grazing lands contain a mixture of many kinds Of' grasses and other plants, some few of which, by reason of their abundance and nutritive value, are considered important range plants; others, constituting usually by far the largest number of kinds, are always sparse in their growth or are innutritious and unpalatable, and therefore have little or no value on a range; others are poison ous, and therefore positively objectionable and injurious.
